March is a big month for women — Women’s History Month, International Women’s Day, and a book birthday for Boss Beauties’ Boss Beauty coffee table book.

Flipping through Boss Beauty, readers will find powerful quotes and empowering stories paired with avatars of women in space suits, business suits, superhero suits, and more. Anyone familiar with the 10,000-item PFP collection, launched in 2021, will see the book as an extension of what the Boss Beauties brand has stood for since it broke into the web3 space.

As Lisa Mayer, founder of Boss Beauties and author of Boss Beauty, explained to OpenSea, her passion has always been about giving women and girls access to opportunities to meet inspiring role models and bring their greatest dreams to life. Her previous company, My Social Canvas, focused on a similar mission. Mayer later brought her entrepreneurial spirit to web3, an arena that she describes as a “brilliant” avenue to do the same important work.

“The purpose behind Boss Beauties is the most important to me,” Mayer said. “It was natural for me to harness the spirit of community and entrepreneurship that web3 brought with it in order to build a brand with the mission to inspire the next generation of women and girls to be everything they want to be.”

In our conversation with Mayer, she walks us through more of the inspiration for the book, why it was important to work with illustrator Marion Ben-Lisa again (who brought the original collection to life), and what she envisions for girls and women as web3 continues to unfold.

Boss Beauty: Inspiration to Be Everything You Want is currently available for pre-order on Amazon, and will be released on March 12, 2024.

Answers have been edited for length and clarity.

OpenSea: What can Boss Beauties fans expect to find in the book?

Lisa Mayer: I could not be more excited for our BB fans to see how beautiful and empowering this book is. We’ve collected quotes and stories that we have placed alongside the Boss Beauties artwork, to inspire women and girls to work towards their personal dreams. Some of the contributors whose quotes we have included are Robin Arzon (the most energetic Peloton instructor you'd come across), Julia Landauer (a racecar driver), Arlan Hamilton (a serial investor whose business advice is not to be missed), and Fran Hauser (a bestselling author whose superpower is kindness). I am excited at the prospect of BB fans getting the complete Boss Beauties experience by reading and visualizing what being a Boss Beauty means. I hope they find it useful to learn to nurture core Boss Beauties characteristics, including self-love, courage, clarity, grace, and passion, so they can find inspiration to take charge and become the CEO of their own lives.

OpenSea: If someone comes across web3 and NFTs for the first time by picking up this book — what do you hope they take away about Boss Beauties and web3 technology?

Lisa Mayer: We hope they feel inspired to explore web3 and other emerging technologies while feeling fearless and confident to evolve their personal and professional paths in life. As they turn the pages, they will be greeted by vibrant artwork showing women in diverse roles with their arms folded in a confident pose. We hope that it moves them to visualize themselves in the roles that we have represented and to go beyond that to think with a growth mindset about their dreams and ambitions.

OpenSea: Since releasing your original collection, Boss Beauties has partnered with everyone from Barbie to NARS. Why was it important for Boss Beauties' next move to be a book?

Lisa Mayer: Visual representation is one of the most powerful ways to inspire people to achieve goals, and with such vibrant artwork, creating a richly illustrated book as a guide to empower women and girls to be everything they want was an obvious choice. Furthermore, the book's nature as a physical item felt like a natural move to us to give women and girls something to read and feel inspired by, put on their bedside or bookshelves, share with their friends and loved ones, and use whenever they needed powerful affirmations and empowering quotes to uplift themselves.

OpenSea: You've worked with artist Marion Ben-Lisa for the Boss Beauties NFT collection and now on your debut book. Can you speak to Ben-Lisa's vision and direction in bringing the Boss Beauties to life?

Lisa Mayer: Marion is highly talented and a perfect match for us. We are in love with the creativity and artistic power with which she wonderfully brought our Boss Beauties vision to life. It was important for us to make sure that each Boss Beauty has a unique array of personal attributes, from facial features, hair, and clothing to adornment and background. Marion used vibrant colors, which makes the Boss Beauties look bright as well as fierce, confident, and powerful. When you look at the portraits, you will notice that the Boss Beauty may look like many things. Maybe she’s a chef or a scientist, wearing a helmet or a suit, or she’s a ballerina or lawyer or teacher. The traits were mixed up to show them wearing different clothing and accessories so it could be clear that a woman can be everything she wants and does not have to be described by just one thing.

OpenSea: The book is tied to your journey as a CEO, entrepreneur, and mom. Can you tell us more about your journey of starting a web3 company and the biggest lesson you have learned since founding BB?

Lisa Mayer: Starting a web3 company was certainly challenging, especially as a mom with a newborn baby. Entrepreneurship, in general, [also] comes with its daily challenges and regular failures. One of the biggest lessons I learned since founding Boss Beauties is not giving up. As an example, at a recent mentorship event, I asked a 9-year-old girl to tell me who her most inspiring role model was. I was presuming that she might say it was a famous Olympian or a well-known philanthropist or perhaps use a pop culture reference, but she gave the most inspiring response. She said, “I am my most inspiring role model.” I was instantly wowed by that, and it reminded me to always remember that we are our best cheerleaders. It is important to give ourselves credit and remember that with conviction, hard work, and consistency, we can achieve our greatest goals. Keep going, keep building, and remember your worth.

OpenSea: Lastly, what are your hopes for where web3 will go in the next few years?

OpenSea: At Boss Beauties, our hope is that women and girls get increased access to educational and work opportunities within the technological advancement that will happen via web3. We hope that with access via educational, financial and social support to web3, women can achieve economic prosperity and therefore, there needs to be continuous growth in their inclusion, to help build a sustainable environment in technology where they can thrive.
