Hello! I’m an artist, Alexander Adamov, and I’m putting my index fingerprint for sale. Why have I decided to do that? After all, a fingerprint is one of the unique biometric factors (alongside the retina and heart rate) that are most widely used in the systems of authentication and identity proofing ranging from banking to mobile devices unlocking. Throughout history the fingerprint was becoming a target for spies, you should remember Ethan Hunt from the cult film series Mission: Impossible, or even a collector’s item. Like the painting by Rembrandt “Study of the Head and Clasped Hands of A Young Man” with preserved artist’s fingerprints (thus causing a hype) that was sold at a Sotheby’s auction for $12 million. So, why am I neglecting my personal security by selling own digitized fingerprint? Honestly saying, I personally don’t understand it myself completely. The act of transferring my personal print is a huge experiment for me too: by sharing a unique part of my physical form and encoding it into the blockchain I can’t assume how valuable and sought after this digital asset will be in future. What identification and personalization technologies are going to appear and be in demand? As for now, the motivation comes from the opportunity to correlate something unique from the real physical world with the technology that allows to underline the content uniqueness in digital environment. During the ownership period of the digital fingerprint, I intend to create a series of artworks, which will also be uploaded on NFT platforms. They will be dedicated to the tactility and interaction with the outside world through touching.
