Ready Player One’s Web3 Metaverse Game Is Coming
It’s about time the novel largely responsible for popularizing the metaverse got its own video game! This week, Readyverse Studios — an immersive gaming platform cofounded by web3 metaverse company Futureverse and science fiction author Ernest Cline — announced Open, the company’s first game.
Players can expect Open to be an interactive battle royale-style game that promises a blend of nostalgia and competition. According to sources, the game will feature favorite characters and recognizable items from collaborating brands and intellectual property (IP) franchises like Cool Cats and Reebok.
Also, keep an eye out for a cameo from the DeLorean car featured in the cult classic “Back to the Future” films.
Developed by game studio Walker Labs, the game’s 3D animation is powered by Unreal Engine 5. Readyverse hinted at the game being fully interoperable across multiple blockchain ecosystems, thereby hopefully enabling digital ownership of in-game items.

Maison Margiela’s Tabi Boot Enters the Metaverse With The Fabricant
Just in case you’ve never glimpsed the unmistakable split-toe Tabi boots by Parisian luxury fashion house Maison Margiela in real life, you can now see them in the metaverse. The innovative haute couture designer announced last week it will be releasing two styles of “MetaTABI” boots to be sold as both a physical and digital product. The MetaTABI design and drop is happening in partnership with The Fabricant, a pioneering digital fashion platform known for auctioning one of the first NFT dresses.
The ultra-exclusive white MetaTABI boot only has 15 editions available, each paired with a physical replica. A limited-edition run of 1,500 MetaTABI units will also be available in black and come with a custom leather wallet.
Staying true to the brand’s essence, digital MetaTABIs will mirror the physical boot’s iconic toe design. Collectors will receive access to perks, like exclusive augmented reality (AR) experiences and games.
Ethereum’s ‘Dencun’ Update and EIP-4844, ‘Proto-Danksharding’
The Ethereum network just got an upgrade! On March 13, developers and users waited with bated breath for the blockchain to undergo its latest upgrade, the “Dencun” Leap, a mashup of “Deneb” and “Cancun,” which refer to two simultaneous updates to Ethereum's execution and consensus layers.
As the most significant update since “Shapella” in April 2023, the Dencun update is expected to usher in a seismic shift towards better scalability, including reduced data fees (gas fees) and faster speeds. The Ethereum community is already predicting considerable savings and lower-cost usage of the blockchain, with developers of the Optimism chain even making a savings estimator tool for common transactions.
Specifically, Dencun introduces a new data storage method known as “proto-danksharding,” or “blobbing,” which bundles data into more manageable chunks that can be temporarily stored on the blockchain and processed in parallel to optimize speeds.

Sony Signs New Patent for ‘Super-Fungible Tokens’ to Power Gaming
Sony, the tech giant behind PlayStation, has published a patent for the concept of “Super-Fungible Tokens.” Originally filed in 2022, the patent describes a play-to-earn token that enables gamers to own and transfer in-game digital items between users.
Reportedly, Sony has not yet revealed whether its blockchain ecosystem will be private or public and interoperable, but the patent does suggest the global technology brand is serious about incorporating NFTs into its games.
As currently outlined, the super-fungible token will utilize metadata to identify and manage in-game assets like skins, items and abilities, potentially allowing players to exchange these assets or use them across different games.
