“Captain Olsen” (1995) is a special piece with much history and background about Jerry Garcia’s mysterious great-grandfather only known to him as Captain Olsen. Around the publication of the children’s book, Harrington Street, Jerry spoke about “Captain Olsen”. “The reason that I wrote about him was this image that I had, that's all I had ever heard about him. Nothing else. There is one little photo of him from, I guess the 1880s and he just looks so furious. He looks mean as spit and he’s just an awful looking guy and he’s got this big forehead, big beard, and these dark eyes and you can’t see his eyes, just shadows. He’s wearing like a navy P jacket and a captain-type hat with long hair…. So all I know about Grandfather Olsen is the photograph. He apparently was a sea captain and probably sailed from Sweden to San Francisco around the cape. Those are frightening and brave men, hard. He stuck out in my mind as a kid as mythic.” While we can’t say for certain if it was sketched originally in a book and scanned to the computer or sketched using a digital charcoal brush, the coloring was done using Fractal Design Painter 2.04. A portion of the proceeds from this auction will be donated to the Rex Foundation.
