An original mood stone ring in 14k gold, accompanied with original velvet pouch and mood stone user guide.

The "mood ring" category was created by Josh Reynolds and initially marketed as the "Mood Stone" ring in August 1975. The original Mood Stone rings were cast in sterling silver and gold plated silver ("Vermeil"). Massive PR featured the Mood Stone as ‘a ring of truth’. This was based on certain principles of “psycho-physiology” and further research by the inventor leading to the design of the original Mood Stone as a calibrated thermal biosensor of relative states of nervous system activity, typically reflecting emotions, such as fear and anxiety. Mood rings not only became one of the major fashion crazes of the 1970s, they are widely considered a unique cultural icon in the history of pop culture artefacts.

The silver and gold plated mood rings were mass produced and sold for $45 ($227 in today’s value) by major department stores throughout the United States. However, only a very few 14 carat gold Mood Stone rings were manufactured and either sold or given to a few Q-trans' backers. To this day the Certifier believes that only one ring, as described below, survived the 40+ years since its manufacture.

An original 14K gold Mood Stone ring, has an identifying inscription on the inner band - "MOOD ⍬ STONE 14K". The stone is no longer functional as its thermochromic liquid crystal material loses its temperature-colour responsiveness over time. The ring comes with its original velvet pouch and the original, proprietary Mood Stone Living Color guide.
