The courage of The Hopeful allowed them to become the foundations of the new age. When the inhabitants of Zveta had leached the planet of resources until it had shrivelled and threatened to die beneath their feet, just like their home planet had done years before, the Government’s Astronomers found what looked to be an ideal new home in the Elpis Galaxy. Those keen for a new life submitted their names in the hope they would be selected; those who refused to leave began referring derisively to them as “The Hopeful” - a term soon co-opted and worn like a badge of pride.
