1. Arrange the pieces: Set up the board with the white pieces on the right side. Position the rooks in the corners, the knights next to them, the bishops next to the knights, the queen on her own matching color, and the king on the remaining square on the same row.

2. Know how the pieces move: Each of the six types of chess pieces moves differently.

Pawns can only move forward one square at a time, but on its first move, it can move either one or two squares forward.

Rooks can move any number of squares forward, backward, left, or right, but cannot move diagonally.

Knights move in the shape of an “L” and can jump over other pieces.

Bishops move diagonally any number of squares.

The queen can move in any direction, any number of squares.

The king can move one square in any direction, but cannot visit a square that is under attack.

3. Understand how pieces capture: Capturing is done by replacing the opponent’s piece with your own. Pawns can only capture one square diagonally in front of them. The other pieces capture by moving to the square that contains the opponent’s piece.

4. Begin the game: Players usually move their pawns and knights out of the way first. Players then develop their bishops and rooks so that they can help control the center of the board.

5. Look for opportunities: Keep an eye out for strong attacks and good defensive positions. Look for pieces that can support each other.

6. Win the game: Capture or checkmate your opponent's king to win the game.
