Why do the funds raise via a NFT?
NFTs, or "non-fungible tokens", are digital certificates that allow the traceability and security of the origin and transactions of your assets. They follow international tradability standards and enable one to raise funds globally, without borders, increasing the flexibility of tickets for contributions or purchases of real assets, such as pieces of buildings, cars, stickers, etc.
Why are Moss issuing and selling NFTs to benefit the quilombo community?
We believe that there is a gain in efficiency and relevant transparency in the use of NFTs to raise funds to cover emergency needs in the community, such as power outages and lack of a police station. With this first issue, we hope to test the structure to eventually digitize conservation work and environmental assets in the region, as we have already successfully done with 450 hectares (1000 acres) of forest in the Jacareacanga region of Pará, raising R$1.5 million (US$ 300k) for the conservation of the region.
Am I buying any assets?
No, this NFT is for donations and fundraising purposes for community use, with no accrual of assets for the holder. In the future, we plan to create conservation and environmental asset NFTs, which will have market value and can be traded on the secondary market.
More about the area and community:
Cachoeira Porteira in Pará is already the largest titled quilombola land in Brazil
The collective title confirms that 225,000 hectares belong to the 145 remaining quilombo families that live in Cachoeira Porteira… The area draws attention to the natural beauty of the Trombetas River, which borders the community and, sinuously, imposes itself in waterfalls, rapids, and framed streams, through the Amazon rainforest.
“There, in that river, there are all kinds of fish. In the forest, there is everything we need to live. If you want to sleep on the street, there's nothing to bother you, at most a bat or two,” said Valdemar dos Santos, 84, born and raised in Cachoeira Porteira. “With great pride”, reiterated Valdemar, one of the oldest residents of the region. According to him, “here is the land of black people. It was here that the slaves fled from the whites, and that's how they built everything we have today. I wouldn't trade it for anything.”
