The artist for this edition is Maya Creates. After losing her mentor and friend to a drunk driver, Maya turned to art to grieve. Since then she has continued to take more ownership of her future education by saving part of her sales for college, while also supporting young artists.
About the featured scientist, Maya says, "Dr. Gay Jane Perez is proof that the sky's the limit in agricultural innovation. She helped launch the Philippines' first microsatellites using satellite technology to increase crop productivity and respond to climate change. She was awarded the ASEAN-US Science Prize for Women in recognition of her work in digital space technology and agriculture. This award recognizes female researchers for scientific contributions while inspiring other young women to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).
I have included the national flower of the Philippines (the Sampaguita) and the national gem (the Philippine Pearl) in my artwork. The Sampaguita flowers on her dress symbolize cultural value, purity, simplicity, humility, and strength. The pearls promote the rich historical and cultural heritage of the Philippines which embodies national unity and spirit. The microsatellites in the artwork represent the first ever Philippine-made microsatellite (Diwata-1) into orbit in 2016, followed by two more successors (Maya-1 and Diwata-2) in 2018. As a young Asian artist and lifelong learner, I'm thankful to Dr. Perez for her inspiring work. She has gracefully balanced life, science, and leadership. A role model who continues to breathe hope for my generation for a brighter future. A heartfelt thank you to Dr. Perez for motivating me to dream big and keep pushing boundaries!"
