WILFRED'S WHEELS. Wilfred, seeing his older brother Hamish pose for “Bubbles”, kicked up a ruckus, demanding to be included in the proceedings, so we made the necessary preparations, thinking he would make a charming Gainsborough's “Blue Boy”. He loved the shiny blue satin and lace collar but flatly refused to change out of the new dungarees his mother had just made for him so, rather than waste the session, we posed him just as he was, in his matching baker-boy cap and hobby-horse. The pride and pleasure in his little face melted all our hearts. P.M.

Bearfoot Masters were originally conceived as images for cards and postcards for museums and art galleries, as comical alternatives for those in the know. Bears, however, big-eyed or otherwise, are not ones for taking a backseat in anything and immediately began revealing their own stories as I drew. Whatever I thought I was doing was immediately hijacked by them, so in the end it was simplest just to follow their lead
