Minowaraji

This yokai is depicted walking through a snow-covered bamboo grove with a mino (straw sandals) as its body and straw sandals as its legs, and carrying a hoe. It is sometimes explained that the spirit of resentment felt by farmers who had to pay heavy tribute during a period of bad harvests transferred to the old straw mats and sandals, transforming them into mourning gods. Mino (straw mats) are believed to have magical powers, as many of the visiting deities wear them, and sandals are often used to avoid monsters, and it is said that such objects were thought to be easily transformed into monsters by their magical powers.
