The Batwa Gaze Collection takes its title and actual inspiration from the oldest homo sapiens sapiens inhabiting our planet, the Batwa People of the Great Lakes Region of Central Africa. Batwa Gaze is an imagination of a child peeking through a forest wall, curiously looking at a “developing” world beyond its borders, without judgement, without fear. An imagination of the spirit-self, the beautiful self, the inner-witness that is always present.
The collection is an interpretation of the Batwa Gaze tapestry work by renowned, multi-disciplinary artist Martin Grizzell. As a textile artist, Grizzell's works have been featured in Time Magazine and exhibited in galleries and sacred spaces throughout the U.S. and France. Two of his works are in the permanent collection of the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of African American History and Culture, and he is a featured designer in the book, Blacks in the History of Fashion (2022).
