DRESS FOR THE JOB YOU WANT, NOT THE ONE YOU HAVE How do you get to exhibit at Art Basel Miami Beach? The outfit is the first step. Or in this case, outfits. Gretchen’s work is all about aspiration and using the combined power of programming and visualization to hack into the art world and other systems of power. Before Gretchen had the internationally renown career she has today, In December 2019 she created a video series which began zoomed in on Gretchen’s paintings as if in an art fair and zoomed out to show Gretchen and a friend practicing being at the art fair by dressing up, hanging out with Gretchen’s paintings, and drinking lots of champagne. This video was used to hack the search results for the art fair during December 2019.

In 2019 when releasing the piece she wrote: "I hear the Art Basel Miami Beach art fair is one hell of a party. While I’m not yet technically exhibiting there yet, I’ve been dressing for the job I want, practicing being an exhibiting artist who is VIP at all the super cool parties with loads of celebrities. The internet cannot parse desire. When we talk about what we want, Google gives it to us now."

TODAY Gretchen Andrew manipulates systems of power with art, glitter and code. She is best known for her playful hacks on major art world and political institutions, including Frieze, The Whitney Biennial, Artforum, The Turner Prize, and The Next American President. In these digital performances she reimagines reality with art and desire. She does this by making assemblage “vision boards” that she programs to become top internet search results. The feminine and trivialized materials of her vision boards purposefully clash with the male-dominated worlds of AI, programming, and political control they also operate within. She trained in London with the artist Billy Childish from 2012-2017. In 2018 the V&A Museum released her book Search Engine Art. Gretchen’s work has recently been featured in Fast Company, Flash Art, The Washington Post, Fortune Magazine, Monopol, Wirtschaftswoche, The Los Angeles Times, and The Financial Times. She is currently exhibiting a solo show at The Francisco Carolinum Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art and is the Artist In Residence at The National Gallery X London.
