The Maroon Bells are amongst the most photographed peaks in the United States. They can be found near Aspen, Colorado and provide scenic, recreational, and scientific interest for modern visitors. These mountain peaks preserve evidence of an ancient mountain range that eroded millions of years before today’s Rocky Mountains rose.

This photograph was taken in early spring, when there was still a noticeable amount of snow on the high peaks. This provides a stunning contrast to the red rocks of the surrounding mountains.
