Caddisflies are one of the most common aquatic insects. They usually live under rocks in lakes, ponds, and streams. Caddisfly larvae build lattices of pebbles, sand, sticks, or algae around themselves to protect their soft bodies from the elements. These lattices are held together by silk. One way humans have taken advantage of this is by putting caddisflies in sediment made of gold and pearls to create caddisfly jewelry.
