Mohandas K. Gandhi is also respectfully called: “Mahatma (the Great Soul) Gandhiji”, and “Bapuji” (the Great Father). He is one of the greatest thinkers of all times. Truth and Non-violence are the bedrock foundation in his thinking. He brought new value system to Civil Disobedience, Politics, Economics, Sociology, Law, Civil Rights, Religion, Daily Way of Life, including Diet and Nutrition. He created a new concept, “Satygraha” which has broad meaning: “holding on to truth”. This concept in practice is “non-violent resistance to evil.” Satyagraha was practiced by other great men – Dr. Marin Luther King Jr., to Nelson Mandela - in their fights for freedom.

“Satyagrahis”—practitioners of satyagraha— always need to adhere to truth and non-violence in thoughts and actions to fight against the evil. Also, it requires undergoing a rigorous process of self-scrutiny. In so doing, the satyagrahi encounters truth in the absolute. Throughout the confrontation with evil, the satyagrahi must adhere to nonviolence, for to employ violence would be to lose correct insight and path. Satyagrahi seeks to conquer through conversion: in the end, there is neither defeat nor victory but rather a new harmony.

Count Leo Tolstoy’s books, particularly “The Kingdom of God is Within You”, had great influence on Mahatma Gandhiji. Tolstoy in a letter to Gandhiji wrote: “…Passive resistance – is a question of the greatest importance not only for India but for the whole of humanity.” Gandhiji started “Tolstoy Farm” in South Africa to honor the great Russian writer.

Another greatest thinker of all times, Albert Einstein wrote in a letter to Mahatma Gandhiji: “You have shown the world that victory or success is possible without violence, even with those people who still follow the method of violence. We may hope that the influence of your work spreads beyond the borders of your nation and help in establishing an international authority which is respected by all to take decisions and replace war conflicts.”

Albert Einstein had great admiration for Mahatma Gandhiji and said: I can understand how heavens work. But I cannot understand* “…how such a man as this one ever in flesh and blood walked upon this Earth”.

On the 75th anniversary of Indian Independence, words of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru still resonate:

“Long years ago we made a tryst with destiny, and now the time comes when we shall redeem our pledge, not wholly or in full measure, but very substantially…We are citizens of a great country on the verge of bold advance, and we have to live up to that high standard. We have hard work ahead. There is no resting for any one of us till we redeem our pledge in full, till we make all the people of India what destiny intended them to be…And to India, our much-loved motherland, the ancient, the eternal and the ever-new, we pay our reverent homage and we bind ourselves afresh to her service...At this solemn moment, we take the pledge of dedication to the service of India and her people and to the still larger cause of humanity.”

                                   "A Tryst with Destiny" Speech
At the midnight of August 14, 1947 by Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru.
