The Scottish Highlands were once covered by ‘The Great Forest of Caledonia’ – a lost wilderness, once home to wolves, bears and lynx; the timber cleared for industry and agriculture. The loss of predatory control, combined with sporting tradition, has seen Scotland’s deer numbers grow unchecked. Today, their browsing of tree saplings limits natural forest regeneration.
Alladale Wilderness Reserve is ‘rewilding’ 23,000 acres in the Scottish Highlands. Over one million native trees have been replanted; carbon sinks have been restored; red squirrel and eagle numbers have soared; wolves may one day be reintroduced.
To protect tree saplings, Neil and his team must cull high numbers of deer. For now, their vision of self-regulating nature comes with controversial human intervention.
Neil began work at Alladale at 16. He will be in his sixties when replanted saplings reach the height of the old-growth forest that remains.
From ART3.io and British Journal of Photography, Decade of Change is a global photography exhibition dedicated to the defining issue of our time: the climate crisis.
Curated by leaders in art, science, activism and beyond, the work shines a light on the strength and fragility of the natural world; the indirect impacts on communities and everyday people, and our global efforts to turn things around.
Now, exclusively on OpenSea, ART3 presents a special selection of artworks from the exhibition. Spanning humankind to wildlife and cityscapes to ecosystems, these NFTs represents a snapshot of a pivotal moment in our history — celebrating all that we have to protect, cautioning all that we have to lose, and urging all of us to fight for our planet.
200 trees will be planted for every NFT sold via our reforestation partner Eden. Minted on Polygon.
