010.Umi Jigoku/Oita

The Jigoku(=hell) area in Beppu City, Oita Prefecture, is said to have been a place of abhorrence, where fumes, hot mud, and boiling water have been spewing out for over a thousand years, as recorded in the "Bungo Fudoki. It is said that it was an abhorrent place where one could not even go near, so even today, the locals call the hot spring spout "Jigoku".

Umi-Jigoku is one of the hot springs that was created about 1200 years ago with the eruption of Tsurumi-dake. The name "Umi-Jigoku" comes from the cobalt blue color of the water, like the sea. The temperature is about 98 degrees Celsius and the depth to the veins of the spring is said to be over 200 meters. The spring is acidic, and the reason why the surface of the water looks blue is because of the high concentration of iron sulfate in the hot spring water.

010番 海地獄/大分県

大分県別府市の地獄地帯は、千年以上も昔より噴気・熱泥・熱湯などが噴出していたことが「豊後風土記」に記せられ、近寄ることもできない忌み嫌われた土地であったといわれています。そのことから人々より「地獄」と称せられるようになりました。今でもこの土地の人々は温泉噴出口を「地獄」とよんでいます。

今から約１２００年前に鶴見岳噴火と共に出来た熱泉のひとつが海地獄です。水面が海のようなコバルトブルーに見えることからその名が付けられるようになりました。温度は約９８度あり、泉脈まで深さは２００メートル以上と言われています。泉質は酸性、水面が青く美しく見えるのは、温泉成分に“硫酸鉄”を多く溶解しているためです。
