008.Subsidence Bridge/Kochi

The magnificent green mountains, the blue sky, the blue Shimanto River, and the sunken bridge are the main tourist attractions. The bridge does not have a parapet in order to reduce the resistance of the water, in case the bridge sinks into the water during a major flood. To prevent trees and other objects from getting caught in the parapets and slowing down the flow of water, and to avoid further flooding of the river, parapets are not built from the beginning. In other words, the sunken bridge symbolizes the lifestyle of the people living in the basin, who accept nature as it is and live in harmony with it, rather than suppressing it.

008番　沈下橋/高知県

雄大な緑の山々に青い空、青い四万十川、そして沈下橋という風景は観光のポイントともなっています。 大洪水で橋が水中に「沈下」することを想定し、水の抵抗を受けにくくするめ橋には欄干がない。欄干によって木などが引っかかり水の流れが悪くなることを防ぎ、更なる川の氾濫を避けるために最初から欄干を作っていないのです。 つまり沈下橋は自然を押さえつけるのではなく、あるがままの自然を受け入れ、折り合って生きていこうという流域にすむ人々の生活様式を象徴するものと言えます。
