"Planetary - Retro Raster Edition" by Gary Tonge

While between video game projects, I became inspired to create images of far off worlds and the heavens. Little did I know at the time where this might lead, but my journey of purely personal and inspirational digital art started with this painting, 22 years ago.

The original “Planetary” was created in October 1999. This 2021 edition harkens back to the times and technology when the piece was made. Rasterized CRT lines, colour aberrations and light bleed were all part of the experience of painting on 1990’s tech. All these facets benefit from closer inspection of the image.

Dated (1999)

Mounted on a faux “monitor screen”

4306x3212 pixels (upscaled and effects added)

Photoshop (version 5.5)

Mouse painted
