The seven rounds the couple takes around the fire are called pheras and have immense significance in marriage because each vow is taken during each game. Thus they are the seven promises of marriage.

Generally, in a Hindu wedding, there are seven pheras or seven steps, but in Rajput weddings, four pheras are taken out of which in three pheras the bride leads, and those three pheras are counted as two each. And in the last phera groom leads. In the presence of Brahmin, God, Fire, Water, Earth and Family, the couple completes four pheras and takes seven vows.

The four pheras represent four stages of life - Dharma, Arth, Kama and Moksha. Dharma - To pursue life’s religious and moral duty Arth - To pursue prosperity Kama - To pursue earthly pleasures Moksha - To seek spiritual salvation

The seven marriage vows in Hindu marriage serve as an anchor to keep the couple going through all the good and tough times together.

The seven promises of love are as follows. In the first vow, the groom promises the bride that he will do everything to provide her and their children with a comfortable and happy lifestyle. The bride promises to shoulder the responsibilities for the groom's and his family's welfare. In the second vow, the groom commits to protect and provide security to their family. The bride agrees to be his strength while demanding undivided attention and eternal love. The couple seeks wealth and prosperity and pledges to care for their children and educate them. In the third vow, the couple assures each other to remain loyal for the rest of their lives. The Groom vows to the bride that he will stay loyal and faithful to his wife and stand by her throughout the thick and thins of life. He will be with her providing mental, physical and financial stability and security to her and their family. The Bride vows to the groom that she will willingly share the responsibility by helping him in every possible way and be ready to endure all with courage and strength. The Groom, in the fourth vow, thanks the bride that through this sacred affair of marriage, she has made his life beautiful and complete, and he vows to respect both sets of families. He also promises to respect her wishes and include her in all his major decisions The Bride vows to the groom that she will stand by his side in all rituals, family and religious commitments and walk by his side, giving her consent for his decisions. She will respect and regard his decisions and include his say in all her choices. Groom promises to consider the bride’s parents as his own and respect all elders. Likewise, the bride promises to take the groom’s parents as her own and respect all elders in the family. The couple vows to be with each other sharing their happiness and sorrows with great understanding and care. They pray to God to bless them with healthy children, and they will strive to nurture their children with enriching values and a generous lifestyle. The couple vows to love and respect each other and stand together in times of joy and grief. They together pray to seek the blessings of God to bestow them with a healthy and long life filled with joy, peace and prosperity. While taking the last vow, the couple pleads for a long-lasting relationship enriched with love, understanding, and loyalty. They take an oath to remain friends forever and stand by each other in this life and the many lives to come.

The vows were compiled ages before, but they have modern values. They stand for equality among the couple, and together, they form a pure bonding of love, understanding and care entering into marital relationships.
