L’amour rebelle explores sexuality and conflict by reimagining Georges Bizet’s classic opera Carmen. In a dream-like landscape of discarded feathers, a bird struggles to escape and a human figure searches for something ungraspable.

“Merav Eldan, Leo Crane and Zachary Whitney are doing fascinating things blending opera, animation, and immersive experiences.”
— COZOMO DE'MEDICI, Medici Minutes #9

L’amour rebelle is the first-ever live opera on the blockchain, premiering on 29 March 2022. It was performed by mezzosoprano Merav Eldan and players from the LA Philharmonic conducted by Zachary Whitney.

This film features a studio recording with a re-edited version of the projections from the live performance. Over 3000 charcoal drawings were animated by Leo Crane, featuring Roy Joseph Butler as Carmen. The film launched at the Oscar-qualifying Provincetown International Film Festival in June 2022 and has since been shown in museums and festivals around the world.
