I spent close to two years on assignment in Guatemala covering Central America between 2005 & 2007. I always carried a camera with me and this was in the days before digital when I was still shooting with a Mamiya medium format range finder. Antigua, Guatemala is a beautiful colonial town that I was lucky enough to call home. Whilst beautiful it is very underprivileged and children are often sent out to work at a very young age. Young girls would often wander the streets selling bread. On this particular day, I noticed a young girl looking longingly at the toy shop whilst still balancing the basket of bread on her head. This was a very poignant scene and one I was implored to capture in order to highlight the social issues gripping Guatemala. After taking a few frames and immortalizing the moment I started speaking with the young girl and took her into the shop to buy a toy for her and her younger brother back at home.

4 for 40 collection image

To celebrate turning 40 I am marking the occasion with a very special drop. I have selected 4 images spanning my entire 20 year career that hold great value to me personally and have played a part in my evolution as an artist. From the early years of my career pre-digital in Guatemala to one of my more recent assignments with the Sea Gypsies of the coast of Borneo. Each image is not only stand alone 1/1 art but comes with a strong attachment to the human element.
