The series Foodalism addresses the disconnect from the origins of the food we consume day-by-day. Global food supply chains are often based on countries far away from the point of consumption. This disconnect often leads to a disregard for the rights and needs of workers, farmers, and environments in the countries of origin, leading to further inequality and dependence. Rather than calling for a boycott of such foods, I advocate for more understanding and appreciation for the labor and resources that go into producing the food that we all rely on.

Pineapples are often seen as a symbol of hospitality and are enjoyed by many around the world. But often disregarded, pineapples require a large amount of energy and resources to cultivate and transport, with most of the world’s supply coming from tropical climates. Many pineapple farms use harmful pesticides having an adverse effect on the environment and local ecosystems. Its industrial farming is often associated with exploitative labor practices with workers from vulnerable backgrounds and very little payment, contributing to continued poverty in these regions.

Numerata raises awareness for the imbalances in this world. We point out critical issues, celebrate successes, and envision a more just world through the means of art.
