Are you a slave to your indulgences?
Are you addicted to quick dopamine hits?
In "Modern Day Futility" the artist Indi Björnsson explores the ever growing misuse and abuse of prescription drugs and the addiction to the screens we carry in our pockets. Ultimately this piece is a commentary on the ever growing loneliness epidemic.
In a world that is more connected than ever, humans are lonelier than ever. It has been long confirmed that connection is the opposite of addiction, and it is what almost every individual struggling with addiction yearns for, even if they are unaware of it. It is the interpersonal bond that provides a sense of love, encouragement, and comprehension that each person requires.
Excessive and unregulated usage of smartphones can result in issues related to social interactions, behavior, and emotions. Smartphones are essentially providing this false feeling of connection.
Individuals who abuse drugs tend to experience a more intense sense of loneliness compared to non-drug users. This feeling of isolation may cause them to feel disconnected from the community and increase the likelihood of engaging in risky behaviors and further drug abuse.
It has also been showed that the brain is affected in a very similar way when it comes to drug abuse and smartphone addiction.
The misuse and abuse of drugs coupled up with smartphone addiction is then a very real and deadly cocktail resulting in intense feelings of loneliness.
Indi Björnsson is an experienced multidisciplinary artist from Iceland, who has been making digital art for almost two decades. In this piece the artist uses a combination of AI tools and digital painting.
The artwork was created for the DEEPFAKE exhibition by the MAIF AI artist collective, hosted by SuperChief NFT Gallery In Los Angeles and Curated by fellow MAIF member and prominent AI artist ClownVamp.
