Manhattan's Chinatown was created in the 1870's as the Chinese immigrants were driven out of the West due to a violent anti-Chinese movement fuelled by white anxiety over jobs as the end of the gold rush approached and the completion of the transcontinental railroad was finalized. The small community located on core streets -Mott, Pell and Doyers- eventually expanded into Chinatown, a home that soon became the largest Chinese community of the Western hemisphere. The community thrived on tourism, food and clothing industries as they continue to practice the centuries-old immigrant tradition of embracing the future.
