On August 27th, 2021, at 12:50 PM UTC, this transaction exploited a consensus bug originating in Geth’s EVM implementation, resulting in a chain split. At the time of the attack, approximately 54% of all Ethereum nodes were vulnerable, greatly increasing the risk of double spends. Fortunately, the exploit had been patched by the Geth team in a preemptively announced release, and the majority of miners had upgraded by this point. Consequently, the chain with the correct behavior was the heaviest (i.e., the canonical) chain; disaster was narrowly avoided. Though this is the second consensus vulnerability to be exploited live on the Ethereum network, this appears to be the first to be exploited maliciously.
