On August 10th, 2021, the cross-bridge protocol PolyNetwork was exploited for $611 million dollars in various tokens. It is reported by The Block, that it is the largest known hack of a DeFi protocol in history.
A query through Dune Analytics of Ethereum's blockchain data reveals that this transaction is the first associated with the wallet used by the attacker for the hack. This transaction represents a transfer of 0.47485685 ETH from the Hoo Exchange to the wallet. On the date of the attack, 0.47485685 ETH is valued at $1,509.37 US Dollars.
Reviewing the "change of state" details of the transaction on Etherscan reveals that there was 0 ETH in the wallet prior to this transaction, confirming that this transaction is the first time that ETH has been added to the wallet.
In the transactions immediately following this transaction, the ETH is then used to pay the gas fees of the the attack vector transaction and transfer an estimated $611 million dollars worth of tokens from the PolyNetwork protocol.
