“Well, at least now I don’t have to smell wet cat hair,” said Nok, the dog.
“Shush, you,” replied Haru, the cat, hissing. “It’s your fault we’re in this mess to begin with, and don’t think I will let you forget that!”
The crackling fire and its lovely warmth were the first nice things to happen to them in quite a long while. They had been tramping through the Vegal forest for hours, and their little paws were blistered and sore, so sitting down was also a nice thing. They sighed in unison, lost in the dancing flames.
“You got food in that ruck?” Nok barked.
“Only cat food,” Haru meowed, then softened. “But I’d be willing to share.”
The wind woke the trees as it breezed on through. The rustling branches put their hair on end. Every crack and creak in the dense, dark woods around them made them jump. They were on pins and needles, and you would be too, if you had been through what these two former enemies had just been through.
“I’m scared, Nok,” Haru the cat said, teary-eyed.
“Me too, Haru,” Nok the dog answered. “But, for what it’s worth, at least we’re not alone.”
Tonight, lost in the woods, they weren’t just a dog and a cat.
They were brothers.
