Unpruned thoughts grow wild and strong. First they grow a voice
that speaks in lies.
Then they grow a face
that looks like ours.
Then they grow audacious and convince us
we are and always were these thoughts,
that our identity
is nothing more.

Resist these petty thoughts
that have grown too bold
for the brain that fenced them in.
Allow this second face
to take its space.
Nod to it upon waking and sleeping
and pay it no mind until it tires
of its own untruths
and grows quiet.
