It is the invisible infiltrator,
spreading through whispers
and hot breath.
A mouth on ours.
Fingertips against skin.

Infecting us before we know it.
Ravaging us without remorse.
Pouring out of every pore
until it coats us
for all to see.
Leaving its slick residue
in our bones, our blood,
our hearts,
even after it’s had its way with us
and left us mangled.
Changed.
Strengthened.

The only disparity:
as soon as we recover
from the embrace of that
sweet sickness,
we long for infection to return.
