An absolute Alpha of Crittervese ruling the mangrove forests of Singapore. His hunting skills are phenomenal and can jump on prey with striking accuracy. This flashy colorful Alien is Hyllus diardi, and belongs to a family of jumping spiders that don’t build webs to trap their prey but are ambush hunters with phenomenal hunting skills.

Hyllus diardi is one of the most famous jumpers in the world and is found only in the mangrove forests of Singapore, India, China, Thailand, Indonesia, Laos and Myanmar. Macro photogs travel to Singapore to shoot this jumper as it is a rarity among jumping spider lovers.

One day I found both male and female diardi meters apart in a mangrove forest. I approached this alpha male slowly and luckily it stayed there for my shoot. Occasionally he jumped on to my lens without any fear. When it stayed in a position on a leaf I clicked away an in camera stack of 8 shots. This jumper has 8 eyes and it is enlightening to learn how it uses all its eyes to track its prey.

Superpower: Hyllus diardi can leap up to 20 times their body length. Humans in comparison can jump only up to 5 times their body length.

Aliens of Earth - Portraits from Critterverse collection image

'Aliens of Earth' is a mission to create a spark within each and everyone to admire, overcome fears and build respect for our Earthly Aliens aka Critters.

We are moving so fast in our daily lives that we hardly ever notice these critters living alongside us. While we seek alien lifeforms on other planets, sadly we haven’t fully understood other species that help preserve our paradise. Each critter not only plays an important role in ecological balance but has an amazing trait and superpower beyond the imagination of the human mind.

I’m Raj Bharathi, a featured and published naturalist explorer, on a photographic journey to discover these phenomenal beings and to unveil the stories of the Unseen World of Nature.

As a debut collection in the NFT verse, each 1/1 Edition brings out an Alien face that is dear to my heart. Each portrait carries a story of their superpower and as you join me in my journey, you will be fascinated and connect with them in some way, as I did.
