Brooklyn Bagel & Coffee Co. - Chelsea 4.08/5
Store
A long store with an open floor plan. Front seating area changed to staging grounds for delivery orders. The purchase process of "order here, receive ticket, pay there" feels a little too uniform when paired with the seemingly disinterested staff. That said, everything about the space is clean and coherent. There's a strong spread display with a wide selection. Drink options are limited, but the pastry options are many. Very solid establishment.
4/5
Bagel
A big boy bagel. Large to extra large size with a strong density of toppings. Good but not great salt ratio, not always apparent on bite. While fresh, it's seemingly an hour away from optimal freshness. If big, doughy bagels are your wheelhouse, consider adding a half point to this score.
4/5
Cream Cheese
Served deli case cool. Wonderful chunks of scallion here, providing texture and freshness. Slightly sloppy application. A very high quantity - almost too much - but it rides the line without tipping. Better to be on this side of the error than the other. A very good spread.
4.25/5
The definitive bagel survey of New York City. 202 bagels reviewed across all five boroughs, with notes of distinction given to the best stores, spreads and bagels. http://everythingiseverything.nyc/
The collection is part one of "Post Clarity," a 5-part NFT series documenting "2020: Total Clarity" by creative duo Highley Varlet. During "Total Clarity," artists Mike Varley and Jessi Highet walked 260 marathons and 7,000 miles around the five boroughs of NYC over one calendar year. https://highleyvarlet.com/
