The reality about kunoichi in history is a bit unclear because the documents written about kunoichi are few, which leads many to believe that they did not actually exist, however the fact that a ninja's services are secret, increases this controversy even more. . Mochizuki Chiyome was the first and only kunoichi who solidified her name in Japanese history, but even her historicity is disputed by some researchers.

Chiyome was born in Kouga. Her husband was Takeda, Moritoki the nephew of Daimyo Takeda, Shingen but Moritoki was killed in battle in 156 and Chiyome was widowed. Shingen gave Chiyome the position of head of the ninja.

She then proceeded to recruit various women, prostitutes, abandoned girls, orphans and rebellious women who had lost their husbands during the war.
