Leaving everything you knew behind is the most daunting yet freeing thing one could experience. You cant hit up that old friend who's always down to hang out and shoot the shit, you cant run over to your parents house and have a nice conversation over dinner. You're on your own. When I left New York earlier this year at 21 for Washington, I was horrified yet confident in my abilities to provide for myself, to be a capable adult. I left New York on good terms, but was excited to begin a new chapter in my life. I was excited to make new friends, experience new things and to grow as a person so i could become a better son, friend and partner. As soon as I settled in, I went out on a roadtrip to take in and explore my new home. As I drove around the peninsula during the peak of winter, I came across this beautiful foggy scene. I quickly pulled my car over and rushed out to photograph it. The first thing I noticed and wont ever forget was the smell of fresh rain and clean air. It rushed into my body and gave me a strong sense of calm, like I was in the right place at the right time. As I walked onto the road to take in this beautiful scene, I see the first car I've seen in hours break through the fog. I sat there for a second, briefly forgetting I was in the middle of the road, then snapped this photo. I saw myself within it, breaking through the fog with light ahed of him, leaving the old behind.
