Drones are also known as: Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs). The earliest recorded use of a UAV dates back to 1849; these were actually just unmanned balloons that were loaded with explosives and were used to attack the Italian city, Venice.
Drones later evolved into medium sized aircrafts in the early to late 20th century and were used for things including Reconnaissance, Surveillance, and Air Strikes.
Although the majority of UAV usage has been used primarily for military purposes, in 2014 Amazon suggested using drones as a freight vehicle i.e., to deliver customer packages.
With the progression of technology, being the exponential phenomena that it is, we may one day see drones that imitate biological life.
