Paracas is a small town on Peru’s west coast, a 4 hour drive south of Lima. The port town acts as a launch point for the boats heading to the uninhabited Islas Ballestas, home to thousands of sea lions, Peruvian pelicans and Humboldt penguins. The Paracas National Reserve spans over 335,000 hectares and is the oldest marine reserve in Peru.

Captured from a tour boat in Paracas, this photograph is of a group of Peruvian pelicans showcasing their low-altitude and coordinated flight. Displaying their 7.5feet wingspan against the backdrop of a clear blue sky and the glistening waters of the Pacific Ocean, the birds' dark feathers stand out as they soar effortlessly through the air.

Pelicans use the updrafts generated by breaking ocean waves to stay aloft without flapping their wings, allowing them to save 60-70% of their energy. This phenomenon is known as “skimming”.

This image is meant to convey a sense of tranquility and natural beauty, with the birds' synchronized flight offering a captivating sight that speaks to the harmony of the natural world.
