Origin Healing: In 2012, I was a new self-taught painter and expressive movement artist. My initial aesthetic consisted largely of bold and saturated figurative portraits. The use of the three primary colors (red, yellow and blue) were staples in communicating my mental health and wellness journey. Each color would fill the bodies in each painting to help convey my growing knowledge and understanding of the language and vocabulary needed to identify, confront and change my personal narrative.
Shanina Dionna is a visual and performing artist, non-profit educator, mental health advocate and a certified Expressive Arts Therapy facilitator. In 2020, Philadelphia Magazine recognized Shanina Dionna as the "Philly artist creating positive spaces for mental health conversations." Her creative practice is informed by personal experiences through medical diagnoses, childhood trauma, hospitalization, therapy treatments, self-care practices and an exploration of holistic measures for cognitive, behavioral and psychological healing. Her arts advocacy has helped bridge the gap between local wellness institutions and marginalized communities through representation, growing partnerships, and creative expression in the Greater Philadelphia area.
