Plate K (Black) of Sierra by Matt DesLauriers.
Sierra is a single output of a generative algorithm, selected among countless iterations, and turned into a high quality screen print in collaboration with Avant Arte. As part of this process, a colour separation technique was applied to the artwork, deconstructing it into Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, and Black (CMYK) colour plates. The printed edition was accompanied by a digital release in the form of ERC-1155 NFTs, where each token represents a single colour plate. This token, Plate K, features a bitmap negative of the Black ink layer, rendered with thousands of small dots. The black and white design is inspired by the way that a light-sensitive emulsion is applied to a physical mesh. These four digital CMYK Plates can be reconstructed to form a full colour composite, mirroring the final printed artwork. Sierra is a project that spans across digital and analog media, acting as a study in the dynamics of colour science and the printmaking process.
Sierra carves a lone mountain from chance and serendipity.
From thousands of generative outputs, Matt DesLauriers was struck by an artwork that broke the confines of his algorithm. Like a mountain reaching out from the landscape below, his code had arranged colours to cast an ‘alpenglow’. This optical phenomenon occurs when the sun dips below the horizon, bathing mountain peaks in a fiery glow.
A paired print and NFT collaboration with Avant Arte, each NFT corresponds to the bitmap of a CMYK layer in Sierra.
