Over the course of Merme evolution (which pre-dates animal evolution by hundreds of millions of years), Mermes moved onto land and developed a feudal, agrarian society, which would be later parodied in human evolution. The ice was not the ocean, the Mermes understood, and learned of the skate, and of the mirth to be found where there is also danger.
