This design encapsulates the Afrofuturism that Lewis champions throughout his work. The mask originated from Africa’s storied Beulah tribe and represents fertility. Lewis then embellished it with references to ivory and gold— “the riches of Africa,” he explains. He added a digital-techno circuit board in the shape of Anansi, the spider God, as well as speakers, meant to invoke his sonic heritage. “As beautiful Black people, we make music for the world, as best we can,” he says. “So, this piece shows the wealth of Afrofuturism.”
Scab shop is a curated gallery celebrating the artists who have evolved tattoo art and culture into what it is today and are defining what it will be tomorrow. As our digital selves serve to represent a larger part of our identity, scab shop serves these artists by extending the reach of their artworks across the physical/digital membrane so that we as collectors can curate our identity in all contexts in a way that helps us feel more like ourselves both online and offline.
