“There is a single species that is responsible for the COVID-19 pandemic - us.” This is the overwhelming, devastating and clear conclusion of leading global experts on biodiversity and ecosystem from IPBES (Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services) that advises the United Nations. Last year, they made the most comprehensive planetary health check ever undertaken: around 1 million species already face extinction, many within decades, unless action is taken to reduce the intensity of drivers of biodiversity loss. As experts pose it, a well-functioning nature, with ecosystems rich in species and processes, is the best barrier against pathogens. The coronavirus could have continued to exist in the animal world without us realizing it, had it not been for human action that has ended up forcing zoonosis, the jump from animals to humans. “As with the climate and biodiversity crises, recent pandemics are a direct consequence of human activity.”
