Multi-disciplinary Korean artist Ruiz Luis is instantly recognisable for his whimsical pop art-inspired “doodle art.” Referencing themes of inclusivity in his work, Ruiz Luiz showcases his cartoon-like and digital doodle characters as a way of expressing emotions and to process the complexities of the human condition. “I can relive the scars and shocks of the past through creation,” he observes. Creating expressive works from the depths of his imagination, Ruiz Luis is informed by the works of artists including Kaws and Matt Gondek, re-constructing Disney-like figures as tropes within his work, highlighting their vulnerabilities, and at times placing them into classical paintings to give them a new purpose.
