The Pacific Coast Highway is one of the most scenic drives in the United States. The two-lane road is carved into the California coastline for hundreds of miles, sprawling mountains and the Pacific Ocean on the other side. Stretching between San Francisco and Los Angeles, the roadways are facing continued damage from California’s intensifying weather. The combination of weather and geological activity such as landslides, mudslides, debris flows, worsened by ferocious wildfires, is only expected to increase both in frequency and intensity. The most beautiful and vulnerable regions alongside Highway 1, like Big Sur, trust in the year-round maintenance crews to ensure safe accessibility, until repairs won't be enough, or too costly to save the highway.
