Black jagged rock forms stand starkly against the once snow-capped Himalayan mountains, showing the region’s melting glaciers and evaporating water supply. The Himalayas are an important water source in Asia, referred to as the continents “Water Tower”, it feeds the ten biggest rivers during dry season. Unfortunately, one-third of the ice in this mountain range is expected to melt by the end of this century. This means that extreme floods, like we’ve seen in Pakistan, will become more frequent and most likely followed by drought, exacerbating water insecurity in Asia. The issue around glacial melting is about water scarcity and the challenges that it will present to mankind, as half of the world is expected to face water shortages by 2025 according to the United Nations. Governments needs to rethink their approach to water management and security as a united front, and not through the media’s sensationalized water wars. Original: 8.5” x 11” inch.
