As an artist whose work focuses on climate change, I see “The Merge” like the ocean’s undercurrent pulling rough tides into their natural order. “The Merge” refers to Ethereum’s transition to a more sustainable mechanism that uses a proof-of-stake, instead of millions of high-powered computers to verify transactions, which wastes a lot of energy. Today marks a significant change that shifts the underlying structure of the Ethereum blockchain to near-carbon neutrality by reducing energy use by more than 99% according to the Ethereum Foundation.
