MCMXCI or 1991 is the final piece I will be minting in 2021. Embedded within 1991 are layers of meaning. As a child of the 90’s, I remember the startup noises from the internet booting up the computer and then patiently waiting for the dial up to connect as it made its now iconic soundtrack. I was too young to realize the excitement and incredible advancement that was being experienced during that era…but in hindsight, I now understand. Fast forward to 2021 and I think we are in the very early innings of Web 3, where everything is new, stimulating and unknown…much like the beginning of the internet itself. I started my journey on Superrare with a Playboy collaboration which inspired me to end this year with something a little cheeky— For anyone who remembers loading images in the 90s, you will recall the tease it created as it would only load piece by piece, byte by byte. To finish 2021, I created 1991 - an elegant reflection on all that has happened within the past year but also a tribute to the last 3 decades. 2021 was my inception into this incredible world of NFT’s and Web 3 - 1991 was my birth year that I share with the era that gave us what we can now call Web 1.
