Based on images and ideas I had during a hypnagogic-experience, this composition features a figure offering himself up forever to a pregnant mother figure, like an object. The figure objectifies himself using a surface shaped like a bowl, almost as if presenting a meal or prize. Whereas the mother, concealed by a commedia dell’arte mask, in some sense, contains a kind of uncanny potency in her—literally carrying life itself in her belly. Both figures are positioned near red curtains that are draped at the ends of the frame. From the entire composition, the scene itself is a small theatre of figures, pushing one expression of the perverse that inhabits some of our unconscious enjoyment. The expression of a masochistic suffering whereby some later pleasure is, in phantasy, obtained at the cost of this suffering, even through "endless" coldness and cruelty. The scene was entirely designed in 3D, using shadow passes to support the arrangement.
