Both brothers joined the 2nd Maryland Regiment, the first unit established by George Washington after the Revolutionary War. In 1794, Washington wrote, "Washington took his oath of allegiance as a soldier of the Revolution ... took up arms in the first revolutionary wars of the eighteenth century"
