A Hikikomori is the Japanese word for a Shut-In, a person who does not leave his house at all, sometimes for decades. This is a growing problem, with about 2 Million people only in Japan being isolated in their homes away from society, and increasing all over the planet. This piece tries to bring awareness and convey the asphyxiating feeling of not being able to leave your room, it talks about depression and difficult times, it is a mirror of your comfort zone. It´s also a celebration of the good old times and childhood memories and a realization that things get better.
This artwork consists of two layers, Day and Night, that help reinforce the feeling of being a Hikikomori. I started making this piece during this year´s lockdown, in the span of 5 months and hundreds of hours I designed, 3d modelled and textured each one of the hundreds of elements in the scene which have been meticulously curated to fit the same 90s aesthetic.
